Sense of SELF
Rationale:
At each stage…
To be ‘life-ready’ socially pupils should know who they are themselves, in the community and in the world.
To be ‘life-ready’ pupils should have appropriate exposure to make choices based on their own context, in their communities context and the world.
To be ‘life-ready’ with appropriate life-skills pupils should know how they can look after themselves, in their own lives, in the community and in the world
To be ‘life-ready’ pupils should be fascinated about their own lives, their community and the world. |
In 2018 Abbotsweld Academy Harlow launched their new and exciting Sense of SELF. This programme aims to widen children’s school experiences by giving them an opportunity to learn new skills that will help them to become life ready. The programme is embedded into the curriculum and covers a wide variety of wonderful experiences. SELF cleverly encompasses Social, Life Skills, Exposure and Fascination and teachers have planned a series of engaging “out of the box” lessons to inspire and broaden children’s thinking. From crochet to egg care, pizza making to discovery of new countries and healthy living the list goes on.
Parents were invited to take part a workshop and have breakfast with the Head of school to find out about this new direction. Local businesses were invited to get involved. Abbostweld Sense of SELF launch day worked in partnership with Babylicious Balloons and Event Décor, Leannes’s Crafty Cupcakes, Hoggs Fitness, Mummy B’s Sweet Treats and The Prince’s Trust. These valuable links added a new dimension to the launch event and are at the essence of what the SELF programme is all about. Working with the local community is an essential part of Abbotsweld Academy. Educating the future citizens of Harlow underpins the SELF programme.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the day some stating that “it was the best day ever!
I loved experiencing all the different lessons and learning new skills like crochet
The level of excitement and appreciation was also felt by parents. Parents gave feedback on the day
Such a fantastic morning and a fundamental part of learning. Brilliant idea and would be interested to come to the next one.
Excellent morning, very impressed - I think the children are very lucky to be given these opportunities.
